Why do You Need a Printer for Homeschooling?

Many curricula give you the option to print PDF’s instead of purchasing text books. Since I am impatient and want things now, this is great as you can get all your material instantly and start right away.

If you have more than one child, you will save money by printing worksheets more than once rather than buying individual books for each child.

Regardless of your curricula, you will find the internet is full of free resources to print additional to your curriculum. The majority of my printing probably goes into this.

Things to Consider Before Buying a Printer

Choosing the right printer for homeschooling will vary from family to family. Before you decide, there are a few points to consider.

Black and White or Color

I have used both black and white and color and my preference will always be with color. Especially when you have younger children. It was remarkable how much more enthusiastic my daughter was when I gave her the colored math sheets vs the black and white sheets.

As your children grow older, the color might not be so important for text but any graphs or biology pictures will appear better in color.

Laser printer vs Inkjet printer

The biggest difference between a laser and inkjet printer is with the ink. A laser printer uses toner while an inkjet printer uses ink.

Laser printers are normally more suitable for office setups with large volumes of printing. But homeschoolers also often find themselves printing volumes. Laser printers initially cost a lot more than inkjet printers but if you print large volumes, it will pay itself off. You will print a lot more on a laser printer before you need to change the toner than for an inkjet printer.

Inkjet printers are more affordable especially if you don’t print a lot. So if you simply want a printer as a backup for odd printing needs, an inkjet printer will do. That said though, there are some good quality inkjet printers that will cope with high volumes too.

Can the printer scan?

Years ago I used the scanner on my printer a lot. Not only for homeschooling. But as technology changes, things evolve. Lately I find scanning directly from my phone quicker and easier.

If you are scanning large volumes, a printer with a scanner might be worth it but otherwise, I wouldn’t be too bothered about scanning.

Can I print via wifi?

If you don’t mind the logistics of connecting cables, this will probably not bother you. I don’t like cables and will always opt for a printer that allows for wifi printing.

This allows me to put the printer anywhere in the house and it is convenient to print from my phone or even while I am in bed.
